St. John’s students record soundtrack for French movie

St. John's International School

Congratulations to the boys and girls in 5th through 8th grade who recorded the entire soundtrack for the French movie “Les Gamins”. Samantha, Valerie, Louise, Harper, Julia, Richard, Valter, Ladislas, Pietro and Charlie spent several days in the recording studio in September 2012 and this is the result. The movie is now playing in theaters in Europe so our students will be heard by many moviegoers! Tribute to Rita Greene

The inauguration of the Greene Gallery took place last Friday, in memory of Rita Greene, a remarkable lady. Her husband John, son Ian and granddaughter Savanna were in attendance for this wonderful occasion, along with close to 100 people who also enjoyed the artwork of our very talented IB art students on the evening. Rita Greene was the first art teacher at St. John’s in 1974 and stayed at the school until 1991. St. John’s Elementary students become chefs for a day

Norway is approximately 1080 kilometers away from Belgium, but on Wednesday, Norway was close to our hearts! Student sells honey for a shelter for children and adolescents

After the success of the first campaign, Stephane, an 8th grade student at St. John’s, is promoting honey (the nectar of the Gods) from his homeland, the peninsula of Halkidiki-Greece, to help the ARSIS Home. This is a home for adolescents and children victims of neglect, ill-treatment and human trafficking, as well as to children who are at risk because of domestic or socio-economic circumstances. Walking the line

St. John's International School

Mr. Macdonald organized a fun lunchtime activity for charity yesterday. He brought special goggles which causes people to feel intoxicated, then challenged them to “walk the line”, accompanied by the famous Johnny Cash song. Students proved the goggles worked quite well and made it very difficult to follow the line on the carpet. Even more difficult was trying to make a dart hit the board, for those who managed to walk the entire line: most darts ended up on the wall! All monies raised go directly to charity. Colorful pop expressions by 6th grade

Grade 6 art students have worked diligently to enlarge their self-portraits using the grid method, then today demonstrated their creativity when they colored their portraits in soft- and/or oil pastels. By creating four different colorful versions of each student’s portrait, we will be able to create an enormous installation reminiscent of the Marilyn Monroe series by Andy Warhol. Korean illustrator inspires students on visit to St. John’s

We have the honor and pleasure of hosting Yangsook Choi this week, an illustrator from South Korea. Ms. Choi arrived in Brussels yesterday afternoon and a reception for the Korean community to welcome her was held in the Elementary Library last evening. Today, Ms. Choi Worked with first graders in the morning and 6th graders in the afternoon. Yangsook Choi grew up in Korea and moved to New York to study art. She was selected as one of the most prominent new children’s book artists by Publishers Weekly, and has written and illustrated many books for young readers. Kindergarten in spring

On our first days after the Easter holiday,  Kindergarten teachers and students were delighted to see the first bulbs are flowering. We had planted our bulbs during October 2012 and it is wonderful to see the changes and share with each other how things have changed in our garden. The students love it: Charlotte: “A lot of them grows”. Kiara: “I think it’s beautiful”. Sophie: “In March you cannot see any flowers. In spring there are lots and tonnes of flowers”. Introducing Timbertots, our new program for younger kids

Timbertots is our new program for children who have turned two and a half. It involves socialization and play through a variety of age-appropriate activities in the dedicated and self-contained Timbertops campus. Students are not required to be fully potty trained but it would help if they have started the potty training process. The Timbertots class will be in a separate building from the Pre-Kindergarten, but on the same campus. Mark your calendars for upcoming summer camps at St. John’s. Camps will take place during the following weeks: Week 1: July 1-5 Week 2: July 8-12 Week 3: August 19-23 The “Coach D Basketball Camp” is confirmed for the week of July 2-5 (9:30-15:00). The camp is open for boys and girls aged 10-18. Multi-sport camps will take place during all three weeks of camps (10:00-15:00) for boys and girls aged 3-12. Registrations will open in late May/early June through the St. John’s Academy link on http://www.stjohns.be. The camps are also open to non-St. John’s students.
