St. John’s sixth-grade students traveled back to the Middle Ages today for the  celebration of Medieval Day. Kings, queens, jesters, blacksmiths and peasants attended the day’s festivities which included a lot of fun and a big feast. Every sixth grader was dressed in medieval garb, each representing a character which the student completed a project about. Even the teachers participated by sporting medieval dress. After being thoroughly entertained, the king and queen led their loyal subjects to a grand hall, where a royal banquet was held. A great way to end the school year! St. John’s is a member of the International School Sports Tournament (ISST) organization. There are 16 full-member schools and 7 non-full member schools in this league (23 schools total). The ISST organization keeps count of each school’s performance in the various sports’ ISST tournaments throughout the year and hands out the Eddie Hufford trophy to the most successful school. We are proud to announce that during the 2012-2013 school year, St. John’s finished in fourth place overall (out of 23 schools), ahead of many schools which are significantly bigger in size. Grade 5 students had great fun recently in art class, making puppets and filming their puppet show! Each student has created his/her own character and made it into a puppet using clay for the head and cardboard and fabrics for the body. Last night, more than 100 people from across the school community enjoyed a fun social event that involved Belgium, beer and cheese. It started off with little taster glasses of different beers, before the crowd went into the theater to enjoy an interesting and entertaining presentation about Belgium by Alison Cornford Mathison of CheeseWeb (cheeseweb.eu). This was followed by beer and cheese, with Hoegaarden and Leffe on tap and five different Belgian beers in bottles, served with a large variety of cheeses. For two days in mid-May, teachers, students, parents, alumni, staff and Board members (about 30 people in total from across the school community) met for the Strategic Planning Annual Review meeting. The main purpose of the meeting was to review progress of the plan in the past year and to set goals for the 2013-14 school year. The third graders participated in a music and drama program. We divided into two groups. The music was taught by Mrs. Carlin. The drama was taught by Mrs. Hicks. After six weeks the two groups switched so that everyone was able to be a part of both sessions. In drama, we learned different warm-ups.  An example is “The Zoom” where you pass the “zoom” around a circle energetically. Then we prepared a skit to perform in front of the whole grade level. St. John’s is launching CUB Care for the 2013-14 school year, a new service offering before and after school childcare for students. We have seen an increasing demand for childcare, mostly for Elementary school aged students, outside the regular school hours and hope this new service will help current and new families. Following the idea that storytelling contains meaningful links to relevant knowledge, Nadine Tyteca, our long-time Head of School’s secretary, today shared stories and anecdotes about Saint John’s origins and growth. Wonderful stories about how the school got started, fun anecdotes and interesting facts helped staff better understand the foundation and heritage of our school. Nadine will retire at the end of this month after an incredible 43 years at St. John’s. Spanish speaking children in Grades 1 & 2 had a special treat for the last day of May when a group of Mrs. Gortari’s 9th Grade Spanish students shared stories they had written as an assignment in their Spanish class.  The children, representing a multitude of Spanish speaking countries, were delighted with their special story time.  Before returning to their teachers, each child also received a story to take with them. The Second Grade went on a field trip to the Wellington and Napoleon Museums as part of our unit of inquiry on history.  At the Wellington Museum, we saw lots of things from the past.  First we found out that the Duke of Wellington was part of the Allied Forces-a group of soldiers made up of men from different countries fighting for the same purpose. His real name was Arthur Wellesley and the Duke of Wellington was his title. We saw a picture of him in the museum. Next, we saw Lord Uxbridge’s fake wooden leg.
