Today’s Middle School Assembly will be replaced with a celebrative series of 5 minute basketball competition in the Gym 7th period between all Advisory groups. After the short game competition, each Advisory will choose a boy and girl to represent them in a voluntary Free Throw Contest, half court contest and 3 point contest. Pre-K-5th grade are busy working on their very own rhythm or melodic compositions alone or in groups. Students are working hard on their compositions and will perform them for their classmates. Parents can listen to the compositions on Portfolio Day in March. For their new Unit of Inquiry about past world and present times, Grade 4 students had a great time learning about art and ancient civilisations at the Musee du Cinquantenaire. They looked at 6 key civilizations: Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, Maya and Aztec and were asked to find links with present times. For example, ancient Syrian mosaics could refer to computer pixels in our current digital world and Greek amphora look like sports trophies. The High School assembly this Friday, January 16, will be dedicated to “freedom of speech”, a topic chosen by the 12th grade students in charge of organizing this assembly. The guest speaker will be Patricia Kelly, who was CNN’s bureau chief in Brussels and its senior international correspondent for 12 years. The assembly takes place in the theater from 11:30-12:20 and is open to St. John’s parents.
