First grade students learn about balanced and healthy eating

Thank you to Sodexo for inviting the 1st graders into the cafeteria and teaching us about balanced and healthy eating!  The children were so lucky because they also got to do some cooking with The Chef!  They learned how to prepare 3 recipes; a fruit brochette, iced-tea and quinoa salad. The children practiced cutting, peeling, squeezing, sharing, cooperation and the best, of course, was tasting it all! We thank Sodexo for inviting us to this workshop.

The International Award teaches students perseverance and teamwork

Last spring five of us traveled to Luxembourg to complete our Gold Award Expedition. We hiked around Luxembourg for 4 days, camping and cooking for ourselves. For Gold Award we had to decide to do our expedition outside of Belgium, we chose Luxembourg thinking it would be flat however this was not the case! Although it was a beautiful countryside, we often compared it to The Shire, there were a lot of steep hills which was very challenging when carrying our 20kg packs. However, this challenge taught us to persevere, and make the best out of a bad situation. Everyone … Continue reading The International Award teaches students perseverance and teamwork

Video tutorials encourage student interaction and purposeful conversations

Tutorials have grown to be an important genre in online video space. Since 2013, the grade 7 media studies course in St. John’s covers this genre in detail. The goal of producing tutorials is to encourage student interaction, purposeful conversations, and growth in English speaking skills and vocabulary. Needless to say, in the meantime students gain confidence in the complex field of media literacy. They actively create audiovisual communication (sound, image, rhythm), experiment with text on screen (color, size, composition), perform basic manipulations (speed, contrast, sound effects). All the while talking and performing in English. In our view, media literacy … Continue reading Video tutorials encourage student interaction and purposeful conversations
